Introducing The Rev. Ted E. Durst

Vicar of The Church of the Holy Innocents and The Church of St Columba of Iona

Father Ted comes to us from the Diocese of Northern Michigan, where he has been Rector of Trinity Church, Houghton since November 2001.

Born in the Texas hill country in 1952, he grew up on his parents' small farm and ranch. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas (1974) and a Master's Degree in Divinity from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois (1995). Before his pastorate in Houghton, he spent six years in the Chicago area, serving in various capacity's at St. Martin's and All Saints, Chicago; Emmanuel Church, Rockford; Cathedral Shelter; The Night Ministry; and the AIDS Pastoral Care Network, Chicago.

He has done further study in the areas of parish ministry, pastoral theology, spiritual life, and counseling.

Fr. Ted's first Sunday with us was August 15th, 2004. He and his partner Mark D. Britt were accompanied by their daughter Mary, who is a freshman in college.

As rector of two parishes Fr. Ted will often be racing from one service to the other, but he will be setting time aside to be able to get to know us all as a community in faith.

Fr. Ted has begun an exciting new service called "Family Mass" at St Columba of Iona, usually on the first Sunday of the month. Currently it begins at 9:15am, with families gathering by 9:00am so that Fr. Ted knows how many assistants he will have... because the children conduct the service! They help by carrying the Cross and the Gospel in the procession, and assist Fr. Ted with the readings and the rest of the service. Occasionally the Family Mass is held on the second Sunday, so be sure to check your schedules or the main church webpage.

Family Mass follows a simplified version of the normal Rite II liturgy, so if you're not sure how to "do church" in the Episcopal tradition with young children or on your own, it can be a good starting point.
